Free and Free up

Are there any differences between:

- I'll see if I can free/free up some time on my schedule next week so that we can meet.

- We need to delete more files to free/free up space on the computer's hard drive. I don't think I can see any difference in meaning and some dictionaries say that "up" is optional (in the right context, of course). Thank you.
