The word freak is related to Old English and means someone who "dances for joy"

This can just mean that they are very strange - which is what Alphecca means

However, it can also mean lover..

- football-freak - someone who loves football

- Jesus freak (probably disrespectful) - someone w

Maybe we have a transatlantic problem here. In US English, the word does seem to have bad meanings

However, I have googled football freaks, film freaks, and Jesus freaks and what I find is people who, respectively, are lovers of football, films and Jesus

The word is perhaps going out of fashion, but it is still there

A football-freak (or other type of freak) is someone who is overly obsessed with football. The "freak" descriptor describes behavior that would be considered by most people as abnormal. (At least in American English)
