What is the meaning of the sentece:

"I shall fortify myself for the fray with a glass of whiskey"

What is fray? Is this some phrase?

For the fray: a struggle of some sort, probably not physical. Generally an exaggeration for effect.

For example, "Aunt Milly has come to assist us in choosing new drapes. I shall ...."
