Framing sentences

I would like to know whether the following sentences are correct (in terms of the usage of the underlined words) and also whether the words in the brackets can subsitute the underlined word.

01.Nobody saw the theif lurking in the shadow of the building. (loitering,sauntering,ambling)

02.The hungry boys were attracted by the delicious scent of cooking food.

03.Some shopkeepers expect their customers to haggle over the prices of goods, so they start with a higher price.

04.Later he wondered how he could have made such a foolish mistake.

05.I prefer my lemonade cold. (icy,freezing)

06.He worked as an apprentice for six months in order to learn the trade.

07.The hot water spilt and scalded my hand. (burnt,singed)

08.The phone call, warning the police of a threat on the Chief Minister's life, turned out to be a hoax.

09.My father cannot help me with homework as he is not conversant with New Mathematics.

10.'Eat quickly' said the matron.'Don't dawdle over your food'.
