Framing sentences

I would like to know whether the following sentences are correct (the usage of the underlined words).
01.He tried to prise open the cover of the packing case, using a crowbar as a lever.
02.The poor child had nothing to offer the kind priest but a handful of wilting wild flowers. (will it be decaying instead of wilting ?)
03.When asked a difficult question at the interview the candidate became blushed and incapable of speech.
04.Drivers can escape traffic accidents if they are more cautious.
05.This year the football team is determined to efface the memory of the terrible defeat they received the previous year.
06.A terrible stench came from the drain where a dead rat lay.
07.Nobody has the authority to over-rule the decision of the referee during the game.
08.Sick of the world's corruption and misery she decided to renounce the world and become a nun.

One more question - Can I use 'flustered' or 'fluttered' instead of 'blushed' in the third sentence ? and 'elude' or 'evade' instead of 'escape' in the fourth. ?

'Flustered' is fine. 'Fluttered' is uncommon, so a

Cliveand 'elude' or 'evade' instead of 'escape' in the fourth. ? All three are not good choices. The common term is 'avoid'

I think escape is good for fiction; it is a more exciting verb.
