Frame someone's up

They are police, they need an accused. So they framed me up," he alleged.

Could you please tell me what he meant by "frame me up" here?

In a plea, the accused said the sentence.

The addition of "up" is a bit lower register.

They framed me.

I was framed.

This is a frame!

This is a frame-up! ("Up," as part of the noun, is idiomatic.)

Thanks Avangi as usual for your useful posts in my threads.

So you mean "They framed me" means "They put me into the crime (though I have not done that)".

BTW: I wonder what you mean by "lower register" as well, sorry for the off-topic though.
