The value of k would have to be such that the left side of the equation is 1/(1/4), which is equal to 4. If k is 1/12, then that makes the denominator of the left side 1/4.

I think you mean this:

-(1/3)k = -4
What is k?

To express this with ordinary type that does not allow for mathematical notation, you need the parentheses.
Capitalize the first word of every sentence.
