Vocabulary

foyer, lobby, entrance

Can these three words used interchangeably?

Thanks,

Top answer

Foyer or lobby is near to an entrance but not the entrance itself. Hence these 2 words can be interchanged but not the word entrance itself. Lobby and foyer mean the same but Foyer is a word of French origin.

To me, "lobby" sounds like a public place (in a hotel or restuarant), whereas a private home might have a "foyer" - although it would more likely be called "the entrance hall."

The word lobby can be used even in a private residence khoff.

The French used the word 'foyer' for lobby as foyer also means a place where there is a fireplace.

Hi Savvy - I can't see where you are from, but perhaps this is a British usage. In the U.S., I would be very startled if someone was showing me their home and said, "And this is the lobby."

Hi khoff,

Is a 'foyer' or the 'entrance hall' an open space or an enclosed room?

In general, how big is it approximately?

Thanks for the comments. It does help.
