Grammar

[four months of spread] or [spreading for four months]

(1) The epidemic stopped after spreading for four months.

(2) The epidemic stopped after four months of spread.

I am not sure which one is correct: (1) or (2)? Thank you for your help.

Number 1 is better. The use of the noun "spread" to mean "spreading" in number 2 is not wrong, but I find it jarring. "Months of spreading" would be better, but number 1 is still best.
