Four-color pictures on cheap paper

Iron Man, Spiderman, Batman, X-Men, and of course, Superman; all these great movie heroes began life as four-color pictures on cheap paper.

Hi,
For a start, what does "four-color" in the above refer to?
Second, is the semicolon in the middle of the sentence right? Is it better to use just a comma?
Last, does "began life" amount to "started out?" Thanks.

A semi-colon functions as a period (full stop). The words before the semi-colon in this case do not make up a sentence, so it is incorrect. Possible solutions: 1) use a dash (many people here don't like that); 2) use a colon; 3) say, [remove semi-colon] "all began their lives as great movie heroes as....."
