Can I say,

When they arrived (at the lake), John found a place / seat to sit.

You can say, When they arrived at the lake, John found a place to sit. But, I don't if there were more than one person arriivng at the lake. if only John went to lake, then it would be: When John arrived at the lake, he found a place to sit.

You can say,

When they arrived at the lake, John found a place to sit.

But, I don't if there were more than one person arriivng at the lake. if only John went to lake, then it would be:

When John arrived at the lake, he found a place to sit.
