There is a world of difference. In the West, children whose natural parents are unable or unwilling to care for them are placed with carefully selected couples or families who (ideally) bring them up as if they were their own children. Where orphanages exist, they are usually characterised as soulless places where large numbers of homeless children receive only basic care.
