Vocabulary

Foster home/ Orphange

Hi,

Would anybody tell me the difference between "foster home" and "orphanage"?
I think both are the place for orphans to be kept, but don't know whether there is a tinge of difference or not.

Regards,

Iman

There is a world of difference. In the West, children whose natural parents are unable or unwilling to care for them are placed with carefully selected couples or families who (ideally) bring them up as if they were their own children. Where orphanages exist, they are usually characterised as soulless places where large numbers of homeless children receive only basic care.

Hi Rover,

Do the foster parents adopt the foster children as their real ones? Because what Longman presents is that they take the child to their family just for a period of time and not as their real children.

Thank you in advance,

Some foster parents subsequently adopt the children, but in the first instance they care for them for a limited period of time. For example, the children's natural parents may later become able to look after them once more.

Local authorities have different and more stringent criteria for adoption.
