Fortune countable or uncountable

I am assuming fortune is both countable and uncountable noun. Is it then okay to say: People made their fortune in the stock market. (instead of fortunes). Must plural (people) always be followed by plural (fortunes)?

Top answer

'Fortune' in the sense of 'a large sum of money' is countable. Usually it is best to match number: I made my fortune; they made their fortunes. I brought my wife; they brought their wives.
