Forsaken gains

Hello

I have troubles with the phase: forsaken gains, from the following sentence:

Harris also considers some of the inherent paradoxes and puzzles in human morality; e.g. “people consider “[actual] losses to be far more significant than forsaken gains” and the fact that people cannot harness the will power do short-term good (like giving up smoking or exercising regularly) that will lead to long-term happiness.

I have also stumbled accross this phrase in another contexts. If anyone could help I would deeply appreciate it.
