Formulate my ideas in writing/on a piece of paper/with pen and paper.

Hi all

Is this natural? Are all the alternatives natural?

I don't think I'll dictate my reponse. I find it's easier to formulate my ideas in writing/on a piece of paper/with pen and paper.

Thank you

All your alternatives are possible. I'd probably tend to just say "on paper". ".

Thanks for your reply Mr Wordy.

Might I ask what 'it' means in 'I find it easier...'? What is being referred to by it?

Thank you again

"it" has much the same function as in "it's easier to do it this way", "it's not my place to comment", "it's raining", etc. It doesn't refer to anything very specific, just vaguely to "the situation". Personally, in everyday use I don't consciously notice it
