Formation of Sentences With Indirect Speech

Is the below sentence with the indirect speech correct? Are there any rules which say that the past perfect tense should or should not be used with some of the verbs in that sentence?

Direct speech: “When I was young, I used to go to that place, and I carried some books with me there.”

Indirect speech: “The man said that when he had been young, he had used to go to that place, and he had carried some books with him there.”
