Formal phrase - American English

Coming from a British perspective, I need to know a formal way to say a petrol station in American English. I know that it's referred to as 'gas/filling station' in the States, but is there anything more formal that I could use?

"Gas station" is a bit more formal than "filling station."

These days they are mostly self service. There's not much service any more at service stations.

The term "petrol station" is unknown in the US. People would have no idea what you meant if you used it here. This is the first time in my life that I've heard it. If I had heard it before reading this post, I would think you were referring to some kind of seabird (petrel) rescue facility.

Around here (NC) they are almost always called gas stations. Once in a while you might hear service station. Filling station isn't typically heard.
