Letter Writing

Formal letter question

Is it ok to start a formal letter (authority to authority) with the sentence: "Let me introduce myself"?

I am a native speaker of Spanish, and when I read that sentence it feels kind of corny. Is it just my foreign way of thinking?

I would appreciate your wise comments ;-)

It should not be necessary. If your position is not made clear be the letterhead, then make it clear in the closing. If writing to an American, simply go directly to the matter at hand.
