Formal letter

Hi,

which greeting do you generally use in BE and AE in formal letters:

Dear Sir / Madam, (if you don't know the name)

Dear Mr./ Mrs., (if you know the surname)

Dear Charlie Brown, (if you know both names)

Top answer

Dear Sir / Madam, (if you don't know the name)- The slash mark looks hurried. Use 'Dear Sir or Madam'. , (if you know the surname)-- This is a very poor form and one that I dislike receiving.
