Form vs class

Hello,

Can you kindly tell me if "form" is interchangeable with "class" in the context of schooling in BrE?

For instance: "When he was in the third form/class at elementary school, he hardly passed due to his learning disability."

Does this sentence sound natural?

Thank you

We do not say "third class" (in this sense). "third form" is correct, but possibly a bit dated. I don't know if anyone really says that any more.

  • The word "form", in this sense, is generally speaking rather dated, with the possible special exception of "sixth form".
  • An alternative is to say "year three".

"he hardly passed" prompts the question "passed what?"
