form a sentence

I would like to form a sentence that basically says," Don't donate to the needy but instead teach them how to make a living, that way, they are able to self-sustain financially."

Could you please provide me with both formal (as in what appears in writing) and casual versions that convey the meaning succinctly?

Thanks
