forgotton word - typical role

A while back I was listening to PBS and heard a woman use a word that meant typical, well known, often repeated character ink a fictional drama. Now I can not remember the word.
I think it sounded like 'norm' or 'forte', but I can not be certain.
Any help appreciated,
robert

thanks for suggestion of 'stereotype', and I think it could be an appropriately used synonym. But the word I heard is not that commonly used. It sounded like an 'insider' word. An 'artsy' term that only those in the trade would use. By trade, I think I am saying those who write/review/critique dramas (such as plays, movies, TV shows, characters, or roles.

The word is 'trope'.
The specific use that I heard was for character tropes
