Ok, I decided to take on this book because I read a lost of fantasy books when i was younger, but abandoned this practice due to my lack of time.
Imagine a land inhabited by a variety of creatures: humans, elfs, giants, dragons... That's the place were the story unravels..
There's a prince, Tristan , and there's a young maiden, Robyn. The prince is in love with this girl, and decides to go hunting with her. A halfling, a dog carer and a fight trainer accompany them in the expedion. They hunt a boar, but also discover that the high mountains have been invaded by giants, a malignant race.. The giants attack them, and kill the fight trainer. Then, Keren, a bard appears from the forest and helps them to hold off the giants. The expeditioners return to Caer Corwell, the capital of the kingdom, to inform the king...
Meanwhile, a horrible creature known as "the beast" is planning to conquer the whole kingdom. This creature can take on any animal form at will, and actually has taken the guise of the king of the northmen. The beast has persuaded the giants to form part of its army, and is leading a fleet of ships to attack Caer Corwell...
At the same time, another group of northmen is slogging through the land to catch the possible fugitives from the capital
But Tristan and his troupe go and defeat this army. The fleet of northmen has arrived to the capital, and attack it, forcing the population to hide in the castle...When Tristan returns to the capital see it practically destroyed. He manages to enter the castle, and fights valiantly with his magic sword. They resist the siege, but the beast is very strong, and is very near to gain the castle, after acquiring the form of a giant monster. At long last, the beast has to flee, thanks in part to the power of Robyn, that discovers that she is a druid and can cast spells. The band of friends pursue the beast to its hideout, and Tristan kills it, but before that the beast kills Keren with a hex
The book is entertaining and easy reading
