Is about optional? Would you ever leave « « forgotten »

That’s forgotten (about). People have forgotten you did that.

Here's an example with and without 'about' in at least one interpretation.

I have forgotten about what you did. (I remember what you did, but I have forgiven/overlooked what you did.)
I have forgotten what you did. (I can't remember what you did.)
