forgot V-ing usage

I saw this on my textbook and couldn't figure out how to teach my kids...
"I forgot buying the tickets to this show so I didn't go see it."
My manager disagrees with me and says there's no problem with the sentence but I just don't understand how someone would forget buying tickets?! (I know grammatically it's not wrong but how about logically?)

Maybe you bought them online while you were doing a lot of other things, and you just forgot about it. It's possible to forget having bought tickets. At any rate, the grammar is what matters.

Maybe you bought them online while you were doing a lot of other things, and you just forgot about it. It's possible to forget having bought tickets. At any rate, the grammar is what matters. The lesson is probably about the difference between "forgot buying" and "forgot to buy."

Yeah, the book was comparing "forgot buying" with "forgot to buy".
But it sounded to me like the author saw something about the show (like an ad or broadcast), which was shown the time he said it, and that he didn't know he had the tickets so he didn't go. I thought about it again overnight and I guess the weird part would be "so I didn't go see it"...if you did forget buying the tickets and y
