Forgot a word

Hi.

I have forgotten a word, but no matter how hard I try I cannot remember it. there was a word for an umberella shaped thing that we use for protecting ourselves from sun.

I think the umberella itself is also used when we want to protect ourselves from hot sun. Am I right?

It would be highly appreciated if you help me in this regard.

I've heard "parasol." I'll have to check the spelling.
