Forgot

Am I supposed to use 'forget' or 'forgot' here? Or either is fine?

1. I was going to ask you something but I forgot.

2. I was going to ask you something but I forget.

Thanks.

You are talking about a past event, so it is "forgot".

1. I was going to ask you for a lift to work but I forgot.

– you realize that you forgot to ask for something.

Scenario: I thought about doing something in the past but I don't remember right now.

Are both of these okay?

1. I forget what I am going to do. (referring to now?)
2. I forgot what I was going to do. (Referring to the time you thought about it? Or does it refer to the time you forgot about it? It doesn't really make sense with 'forgot' here right? With 'forgot'

Hello Jack

You go into the bedroom and stand still for a moment, looking blank and scratching your head. You say to yourself, "I forget what I came in here to do". (Or "I've forgotten what I came in here to do.")

Then you start looking in a drawer and take out some socks. Someone else in the room says to you, "Why did you look blank and scratch your head?"

To which you
