"Forgive us for the beasts we are."

Hi everyone! I would really appreciate your help with the following sentence:

"Forgive us for the beasts we are."

The intended meaning of this sentence is "forgive us for being beasts", but I would really like to use it in this form in a song for rhythmic/phonetic reasons. Is it grammatically acceptable?

Many thanks!
Evelyn

I think it's fine, especially in a song where slightly unnatural constructions are often used for rhythmic/phonetic reasons.
