Forgive me Lord

Hello,

A deserter was caught, and he was going to be beheaded. He rested his head on the wood block for execution, murmuring to himself, "Forgive me, Lord".

Could anyone explain the meaning of "Forgive me, Lord"? It seems that is relevant to Christianity. I don't understand why he asked the God to forgive him. Did he ask the God to forgive him about being deserter?

Did he ask the *** to forgive him about being a deserter? Maybe.

Or maybe he wanted forgiveness for other bad things he had done in his life. We ddon't know.
