Forget +Ving or to-inf

I have a problem with this sentence " I certainly didn't forget .......(ask) him the question because he's already given me his answer. "

I think "asking" is suitable but the answer is "to ask".

Please explain this to me! Thanks a lot!

As written, the sentence just means that you still remember (didn't forget) that you asked him that question (at some point in the past).

Some people (I'm one of them) never use the -ing form with the verb 'forget'.

It is also generally rather rare:
