forget about

In reference to Quirk,
ex. I forget (about) locking the door.
This sentence could be optionally interpreted as I forget that I should have locked the door. (should with putative sense)

Does this mean that I forget that the very idea of locking the door with the result of the door open?

The way I understand it, yes. ("I forgot to lock the door" is used in that case, as you would probably know,)
