Foreground

Hi

A lot of film makers and dance companies have made use of the music (which was on the record they made). It suits applications where you don't want too much foreground, you want music with a certain transparency, where it really is a mood setting.

What does "foreground" in this context may mean?

I understand that this kind of music would be used by dance companies if they needed "light music" just to change the mood during the show or in the movie, I guess?

Music that we often barely hear is called "background music". The person here is obviously trying to use "foreground" as the opposite, meaning that the music is more obvious. I've never heard the word used this way before.

= You don't want the kind of music that draws attention to itself. The music must not be so interesting, rhythmic, loud, or colorful in other ways that it distracts attention from what it is intended to accompany as a background.
