For/as his birthday gift

I have made up two similar examples below.

(1) Bill is inviting me to his birthday party. I want to buy a tablet for his birthday gift.

(2) Bill is inviting me to his birthday party. I want to buy a tablet as his birthday gift.

Which preposition is correct: 'for' or 'as'? Thank you very much for your help.
