For yourself

Why does "for yourself" mean "by yourself" in sentences like "Find out for yourself." ?
Is it just an idiom or is there a reason behind it ?

Is it just an idiom or is there a reason behind it ? It is idiomatic, of course, but the reason may be that for implies a benefit, so the idea could be that it would do you some good to find out for yourself. Still, I suppose it's just as easy to memorize it as a fixed phrase.
