For years, Fayed has unsuccessfully sought British citizenship

I know what the following sentence means but I couldn't understand its grammatical structure. It's unsuccessfully which disturbs me. It could have been something like ''...has been unsuccessful in seeking...''. Please help me.

Hi Jackson In your sentence, "has unsuccessfully sought British citizenship" means "has sought British citizenship without success". Think of it this way: The verb 'seek' means 'look for in order to find'. In other words, the goal is 'find'.
