For X dollars less

Hello, I'm not sure what's the meaning of "for X dollars less", like in following sentence; does it mean the amount of dollars = (another amount of dollars) - X dollars ?

“We don’t underestimate people....Rather than making a far inferior product for a hundred dollars less, we gave the people the product that they want and that will serve them for years, even though it’s a little pricier. People are smart; they figure these things out.” --Steve Jobs

And by the way, does the word "for" here mean "costing" ?

Thank you in advance!

Thank you! and, is the word "for" here means "cost"?

No. How could a preposition mean 'cost'? It is a function word.

8. in consideration or payment of; in return for: three for a dollar; to be thanked for one's efforts.

Interpreting "for" to have the same meaning as "costing" is totally legitimate in this case. This translation is probably what I would supply.
