...for when...

Hi teachers,

Excerpts:

What started as an unthinkable, crazy idea became a commitment for when Jay, Lim and San signed up for the marathon at the beginning of this early summer.

Can you please tell me if "for" is needed here? I have seen a lot of "for when" but I don't understand why it is needed?

Thanks

Chocolate is a great snack for when you are feeling low.

A small umbrella is handy to have tucked away in your bag for when it rains.

I must have upset her, for when she called me back, she was crying.

Hi AlpheccaStars,

Thanks for your help again.

Can for be deleted in your sentences? I cannot in my comprehension understand the use of "for"? Why it is needed and why it is not?

1. Chocolate is a great snack when you are feeling low.

2. A small umbrella is handy to have tucked away in your bag when it rains.

3. I must have upset her, when she call

Deleting "for" changes the meaning. The first two are general advice, and the third gives a reason.

1. Chocolate is a great snack for (the times) when you are feeling low.

2. A small umbrella is handy to have tucked away in your bag for when (in cases where) it rains.

3. I must have upset her, for (because) when she called me back, she was crying.
