For vs. Since w/ ago

There was a weird question in my English exam today that went something like this:

I haven't talked to Jake..........three years ago.

You could either choose 'For' or 'Since'

Neither choices feel right to me but in the end, I chose 'Since', I was informed by the teacher that the right answer was 'For'

The sentence in question, as written, is incorrect with for. These work I haven't talked to Jake for 3 years. (more common) I haven't talked to Jake since 3 years ago.

Though not a choice in the exam, "in" three years is another option.
