"For the heck of something"

What does this expression mean?
I was reading book about HTML,
and then the book talked about how one should use CSS in order to maintain a uniform look of the created web site.
It goes "Why CSS? Because you probably shouldn't use different fonts for different pages or different background for different sections, or just for the heck of it."

What in the world does the "for the heck of it" here mean?

Top answer

It's when one does something because one wants to or because one thinks it is funny. For example: Let's go take a walk to the park, just for the heck of it.
