For the first time ever

For the first time ever, Taiwan has tow small asteroids to call its own.

I'd like to make sure of the meaning of "ever" here; does it mean "in human history" or something else? Thanks.

It's just a way of emphasizing that it's the first time. The meaning isn't different from "For the first time,"
