For (so) long

I'm sorry that I couldn't stick around for Emotion: football long.

Is "for Emotion: football long" is not appropriate in written english?(or when writing a formal essay)

for a long time is better? or just no distinction?

Hard to say. I cannot think of a very formal situation in which you might use either, really (in which I would use, perhaps, 'for a considerable length of time'), but plenty of written English is comfortable with those phrases, certainly.

Thank you for your answer.

Sorry, I didn't understand clearly what you said..

What you mean is 'for a long time' and 'for long' can be seen often in written English? or..?

Yes, I see them as 'standard' - neither formal nor informal, particularly.
