for - simple past / past perfect.

Can i use 'for' to describe a duration of an activity in the two folloing cases?

1. I had had my car for five years.

2. I had my car for five years.

*** of course, i know that 'have been having' is not correct because it is a stative verb.

Yes. Both are completely acceptable sentences.

We can use "for" in not only Past perfect sentences, but also Simple Past sentences.
