For repairing/to repair

Are these sentences correct:
1-For repairing the car, I only had a wrench.
2-To repair the car, I only had a wrench.

3-For repairing the car, I had to open the hood.
4-To repair the car, I had to open the hood.

I think '3' is incorrect.

1 is awkward. 2 is OK. 3 is wrong. 4 is OK. You don't really need a comma in any of them.

Native speakers would put those introductory phrases last:

I had only a wrench to repair the car. I had to open the hood to repair the car.

These last two above are the most idiomatic.
