FOR or TO?

Hi there,

Could you please explain in general when to use FOR or TO, especially in such situations like ..

I am waiting (for/to) something to happen.

Should I wait (for/to) you to come?

What kind of present should I buy (for/to) her?

Thanks Doll for your response .. however, I don't think this is true for all verbs since we can say ..

I will be waiting for you.

Cannot wait to hear from you.

Should I wait (for/to) you to come? Yes, please. I will be coming to your house soon.

The pattern with wait is completely different from the pattern with buy.

The wait pattern uses a FOR...TO... clause. The subject comes after FOR. The verb comes after TO.

How about..

It is an unfair disadvantage (for/to) those who are sick.

For- in this situation, the writer, in his opinion, tells the reader that the sick has the disadvantage.
To- in this situation, the writer tells the reader that the sick thinks they have the disadvantage.

Is that right?

That explanation is not really right. Both of them about the same. Neither says anything about what the sick think about having or not having a disadvantage.
