I was hoping someone would be able to advise on the following grammatical point - for me or to me and how and why should either be used in speech. So for example -
For me, the city looks like New York. To me the city looks like New York.
Would you pass the salt for me? Would you pass the salt to me?
Any advice appreciated.

Hello William C. Use "to" in both of your examples. You are the recipient of the salt; it is going to you.
