Hi, >Rumour-mongering journalists and short-selling speculators can only be blamed for so long. What does "so long" means in this context? I read it in those sentences.
Without growth, the Communist Party loses its political legitimacy, yet the old growth model is broken, and to achieve a new one, the authorities must cede the very power and influence that sustains them. Rumour-mongering journalists and short-selling speculators can only be blamed for so long.
I know "so long" means goodbye, and "for so long" means long time, also "blame" is sometime accompanied by "for" such as "blame someone for something." But I can't distinguish usage in this context.
Thanks.

They can only be blamed for so long.
"For so long" here means there is a limit to the amount of time where they can be the cause.
In this case, the economy has failed, and the Communists (who are in power) blame journalists and speculators.
