'For lack of a better term'

When somone says a word/term then says 'for lack of a better term...', does it mean that no better term exists period, or does it mean no better term comes to their mind at the moment?

Top answer

It can mean either. I guess when they say that they mean that no better term comes to their mind at that time. This can also mean that no better word or term exists.
