Grammar

[For John], disaster occured

For John, the new year brought disaster.
[From my English grammar book in Korean]
I think "for" should be used when to the object of "for," positive is the detonation or connotation of the sentence of "it"
So I was wondering why it is "for John," not "to John."
Thank you in advance for your help.
