For how

Sir,

1. For how long did he play.

2. How long did he play.

What is difference in meaning between two sentences?

In (1) for being a preposition, as I know preposition take noun or pronoun as object. But here object is "how long" which I think is not a noun or pronoun.

Thanks.

It is a degree adverbial of duration; they are synonymous, and either form is acceptable (the 'for' form is quite formal). ' A: 'He played for an hour'.
