For Half?

So a war is going on, and it is currently a little more than half way.
then, a commentator says “The commander hid for half the battle (currently dead)” Does this mean the commander hid for half of current time, or just the time up to the half Of the whole battle?

what if the war is current half way? What would this mean if the commentator says “The commander hid for half the battle, and then died?

So a war is going on, and it is currently a little more than half way. If the war is currently going on, how do you know what the halfway point is? It might end tomorrow or it might end ten years from now.

This reminds me of the old joke about the messenger who brings news to the KIng. "Your Majesty, the Hundred Years War started yesterday."
